While Tiwala runs various daily programs for street & slum children in the city (see projects page), our largest project is to establish a residential care facility on a rural farm. This facility will be for street & slum boys (ages 5-13 years) who need to be rescued from their plight. There are many cases of abandonment, street living and child abuse (including sexual abuse) amongst boys in our region and unfortunately very few facilities for their safety and rehabilitation currently exist.
Tiwala Village will be structured as a family community in a natural and safe environment conducive to healing. Tiwala plans to build six individual homes, with each home accommodating ten boys and two female house parents. While the house parents will be mother figures for the boys, Tiwala will make provision for father figures for the boys, in collaboration with our affiliated church: men within the church community will consistently visit the boys in the village, engaging the boys in activities (i.e. sport, games etc.) and small group mentoring. There will also be male and female social workers and support personnel residing in the village.
In addition to the love & nurture the boys will receive within their homes and village community, the following treatment & programs will be made available to them:
Tiwala's long-term goal is to be self-sustaining to a large extent and to acquire more involvement and support from our local government and community. Once our farm facility is up and running Tiwala plans to initiate various income-generating projects, such as:
Tiwala will grow a lot of our own food produce, which will be used to sustain the children and workers within our village as well as our feeding programs within the slum communities in the city.
